at look at this, the one collusion was that -- conclusion was this was not an appropriate use of u.s. government funds. >> the jury remains out on precisely why the trip was canceled. quoting andrew w.k. on twitter i'm blown away after a year of planning, the u.s. state department canceled my middle east trip because i'm too party. he went on to say in a statement you can't judge a book by its cover which is true. for what it's worth other american cultural ambassadors have continued forward. kim kardashian in bahrain over the weekend spreading her unique brand of diplomacy, a milk shake franchise. moat with protests from sunni sa laugh fists who didn't approve of her, quote, bad reputation. joining me on set is the king of partying, motivational speaker and professional partier andrew w.k. andrew, great to have you on set. >> thank you. it's wonderful to be here, alex. >> as i was saying, there's a lot of buzz in the building about the fact you're here. we didn't know what to expect but we're happy to have you here. the first thing i have to ask you, what to your mind went down? you
. >> in the u.s. >> in the united states of america. just wanted to add that. >> yes. >> that's right. there's a difference there. >> but, jose, let me ask you since you are in miami and marco rubio has been -- he is presumed to be almost the voice of the gop on immigration concerns, and there is talk of a gang of eight that is getting together on the hill to tackle immigration that includes four democrats, bennett durbin, four members of the gop flake, grant, mccain, and leaf. marco rubio is not in that mix, and he is said to be working on sort of smaller pieces of immigration legislation, but not something bigger. we contacted his office saying, you know, why is senator rubio not in the mix on the gang of eight here, and the response is we won't prejudge their efforts, but senator rubio has said that he believes immigration reform should not be handled in one big comprehensive bill, but instead be done in a comprehensive series of bills. we're working with republican and democratic colleagues in both the house and senate on those pieces of legislation. >> yeah. i don't know what all those
look at who donated to the president, university of california, microsoft, google, u.s. government and harvard university. if you talk about where ideas are coming from, and where sort of american innovation is headquartered, obama won it handily by 43% he won santa clara county where the high-tech companies are centered. >> sometimes stereotypes hold true, right? one of the things that's interesting in the context of the fiscal cliff also is where not only financial companies not just the takers, but where ceos around the country cast their lot. one of the things that's interesting as january 1st approaches is to see, you know, the hysteria on cnbc and how that's adjusted. >> we're not saying anything bad about cnbc but go ahead. >> but do ceos continue to push a kind of, you know, low taxes mantra, kind of traditional fiscal sort of republican mantra or do they really say, we need a deal here, we're really to give and push republicans in that direction. >> and it would seem like they are willing to come to the table and meet the white house -- i mean first of all they lost basica
, ted cruz, pat toomey and mike lee, all elected to the u.s. senate. he also endorsed candidates including kr christine i'm not a witch o'donnell, todd legitimate rape akin and richard god intends for you to get raped mourdock. demint couldn't help himself on the way out giving speaker boehner one poke in the eye on the rush limbaugh show yesterday. >> i think it's safe to say boehner is not forcing either of you guys out, right? >> that's pretty true. might work a little bit the other way, rush. >> zing. is demint more of a threat to his party now he's outside the senate? as lbj famously said of jay edgar hoover probably better to have him inside the tent out, than outside the tent in. joining us is former chairman of the rnc, in a red sweater, msnbc contributor, the notorious michael steele. that is a fetching color for you, chairman. >> thank you. ho, ho, hey. >> chairman steele tell us what this departure means for the rnc? everybody is reading this differently. some saying tea he's going to become a thorn in the side of gop when at heritage, other people are saying get rid o
so in the u.s. senate. it requires reaching across the aisle and finding partners from the opposite party. it means ultimately putting the interest of country and constituents ahead of the dictates of party and ideology. >> hopefully they were listening. after the break, when evaluating the white house potential governor -- i mean, when evaluating the white house of chris christie, the governor of new jersey, weight is often more than simply the elephant in the room. should christie's health disqualify him from 1600 pennsylvania avenue? we'll lift that topic next on "now." to the best vacation spot on earth. . jonathan, i have a list, a horrible list, of the deadliest u.s. school shootings. columbine, of course, killed 12 students before the two shooters took their own lives. we're hearing reports now that up to 20 children may have been shot. it is hopefully -- we say this every single time we cover one of these things, a line in the sand. there has got to be a measurable xhank, some kind of reaction. one would hope that there will be some political capital to report in the way we handle gun and gun violence in this country. >> what's so traumatizing, beyond the trauma that we're already experiencing is the fact that we're talking about the possibility of multiple children dead. not high school students. want college students. not pedestrians on the street. grown adults. we're talking about children who went to school today, you know, starry-eyed, going to school with all the hope and joy that comes with that. especially in this holiday season and to now learn that a gunman went into that school. someone from the outside. i mean, just we don't know who this gunman is. we don't know if this
employees works at all mart, employs 1.4 million u.s. workers. this is according to a study, if large retailers paid $25,000 a year for full-time year-round work more than 700,000 americans would be able to cross the poverty line. >> that's stunning. and what that focuses on is a fact that is on cured in the debate on poverty. most poor people work every day. people have a notion they're on the dole and chilling out, buying cadillacs and eating mcdonald's and getting their weave done. reality is that most poor people are working two, three jobs but they work 40, 50, 60 hours a week, they can't make ends meet. they have two, three jobs so they can't go to their kids' school to talk about their report card and if they don't they are looked at as poor parents but if they do they might lose a job that will sustain the kid that might relieve him from being a lash key kid but put them on the dole. a little help from the labor force would help these poor people turn themselves in to worthy workers who are recipients of a wage that is living not barely subsifting. >> talking about the income
in the deaths of four americans, including u.s. ambassador chris stevens. the scathing 39-page report has now led to the resignation or dismissals of four senior state department officials. in addition to cataloging the security failures in benghazi, the report also concluded that there had been no demonstration at the site prior to the attack. it reminded americans that "the key questions surrounding the identity, actions, and motivations of the perpetrators remain to be determined." all of this drew some tough reaction from lawmakers on the senate foreign relations committee who heard testimony from two deputy secretaries in place of hillary clinton who is recuperating from a concussion. >> i cannot imagine that we had people out there with the lack of security existing, and it seems to me what the state department would have done is to prioritize and if, in fact, we cannot have people safely there, not send them there. >> fending off criticism over her absence, clinton yesterday announced that she will appear before the committee in mid-january once she has recovered. at the start of today

by law to temporary regardly postpone the date that u.s. would otherwise default on its legal obligations. a lot of republicans think because they're willing to be irresponsible, because they're proven that they will irresponsibly endanger the good faith and credit of the united states, that's another piece of leverage down the road. >> yeah. and i think they're mistaken about this. i think the president has made it very clear that as a de facto position he will not compromise. because he wants to kick the habit of using the debt ceiling as a negotiating tool. obviously, it was a telling time for secretary geithner to put out that statement yesterday. >> did you find it political? >> no, i would never -- >> if the budget matters. >> no. but it does suggest that the white house wants a grand bargain type deal, that their investment is in getting something big together so that they can resolve all these things right now. you don't have to go and ask do this all over again in two months' time, they can start focusing on other legislative matters. >> and politicians are inherently risk averse
